Unit Overview

Daniel Guzman and Ink

Grade Level: Drawing; 9-12th (approx. 30 students, 50 minute sessions)

Big Idea: Multiculturalism and "Comic" Culture

Rationale: Students will learn about a multicultural artist (Guzman) and how their own experiences can be translated into an art form. This will help students condense their personal experiences into an art-making project to promote tolerance (and even possibly acceptance). This is especially important in classrooms that have diverse environments that potentially have conflict or stereotypes that are harmful to the overall classroom environment.

Key Concepts:

  • Create a pen and ink image in the style of the multicultural artist, Daniel Guzmán.

  • Understand and use pen and ink techniques such as stipple, cross-hatching, and articulated line.

  • Apply elements and principles of design in a successful composition.
